Mrs. Hogan's 4th Grade Math Class
August 19-23, 2018
Standards
4.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700/70=10 by applying concepts of place value and division.
4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on the meanings of the digits in each place, using <,>, and = symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Monday
8/19/19
Standard: 4.NBT.1, 4.NBT.2
Student Friendly Objectives: TSW interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison.
Materials: multiply and divide by 10 sprints, white board, thousands place value chart, marker, pencils
Guided Practice: TSW complete as much of the sprint as they can in 2 minutes allotted. TSW review and practice place value skills in isolation for success in multiplying different place value units during the lesson.
Independent Practice: TSW read, justify, and explain their answer for given word problem. The problem reviews skills from 3rd grade over area, perimeter, multiplication, and addition.
Tuesday
8/20/19
Standard: 4.NBT.1, 4.NBT.2
Student Friendly Objectives: TSW interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison.
Materials: Problem Set page, pencil
Mini-Lesson: TTW guide the students through the concept development of the lesson“1 ten is 10 times as much as 1 one.” “One hundred is 10 times as much as 1 ten.” “one thousand is 10 times as much as 1 hundred.” Interpreting a multiplication comparison as an equation.
Guided Practice:
Independent Practice: Problem Set: TSW will work designated problems on pages 29-30
Wednesday
8/21/19
Standard: 3.OA.7, 4.NBT.2, 4.NB5.1
Student-Friendly Objective: TSW recognize a digit represents 10 times the value of what it represents in the place to it’s right.
Materials: Whiteboards, markers, pencil, paper, math notebook, problem set, application problem
Mini-Lesson: TTW…project multiplication facts on the board such as (10 ones x 10 = 1__). Students will answer question (1 hundred), then write and say the sentence in standard form (10 x 10 = 100). Teacher will pass out application problem.
Guided Practice: Application Problem. Whole group we will read the problem. We will use decoding and literacy strategies to decode the problem and solve it.
Independent Practice: Multiply single units by 10 to build the place value chart to 1 million. (problem set)
Small Group Instruction: work on addition and subtraction of multi-digit whole numbers. (Essential Standards)
Thursday
8/22/19
Standard: 3.OA.7, 4.NBT.1, 4.NBT.2
Student Friendly Objectives: TSW name number swithin 1 million by building an understanding of the place value chart and placement of commas for naming base thousand units.
Materials: Application Problem, White Board, Markers, Pencil, Problem Set
Mini-Lesson: TSW complete a sprint that challenges them to multiply by 3. Students will review and practice place value skills in isolation. TTW project 1,486,357 on a PV chart. TTW underline the 5 and TSW say the digit, the place of the digit, and the value of the digit. TTW repeat the process underlingin 8, 4, 1, and 6. THe group will read and decode an application problem about multiplying by 10, using place value chart.
Guided Practice: TSW will discover patterns of the base ten system, place commas in and naming numbers, add to make 10 of a unit and bundling up to 1 million, 10 times as many with multiple units.
Independent Practice: TSW solve problems on problem set using the RDW approach used for Application Problems.
Small Group Instruction: work on addition and subtraction of multi-digit whole numbers. (Essential Standards)
Friday
Standard: 3.OA.7, 4.NBT.1, 4.NBT.2, 4.NB5.1
